2 Now add a cluster of spray rose stems both at the base of the arrangement and around the tall stems of gladioli on top.

3 Insert the branches of ilex berries so that they lean back slightly. Their weight will help to balance the container and that of the flowers.

4 Now fill in the triangular outline of the display using the large cordyline leaves. Keep the sides straight and not too rounded. As the arrangement is designed to stand in a corner or alcove or against a wall, there’s no point in making it in the round. It should look like an all-round arrangement from the front or sides, but with a third missing at the back. Aim for a loose, slightly random effect rather than a very neat, symmetrical arrangement.
